Emmanuelle Seigner comes from a well-known family of actors. Both her grandfather, Louis Seigner, and her aunt, Françoise, belonged to the venerable Comédie Française; Louis Seigner also served as Managing Director of the company, which dates back to 1680.
Daughter of a photographer and a journalist, Seigner began her career as a model at the age of fourteen, and transitioned into acting when she was featured in Jean-Luc Godard's Detective. Her subsequent films include Pierre Granier-Defferre's Cours Privé; Roman Polanski's Frantic and Bitter Moon; Mario Monicelli's Il Male oscuro; Claude Miller's Le Sourire; Michel Deville's La Divine poursuite; and Gabriele Salvatores' Nirvana. Seigner was nominated for a 1998 César Award (the French equivalent of the Academy Awards®) for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Nicole Garcia's Place Vendôme, opposite Catherine Deneuve. She has a sister who is also an actress : Mathilde Seigner.
