Alex Kingston was raised in Surrey in England. Her father, Tony Kingston, was a butcher; her German-born mother came to the UK as an au pair and stayed there as a housewife. Alex has two younger sisters, Nicola and Susannah. At an early age, Alex was intrigued by the theatre after seeing her uncle on the stage. Alex got her own taste of the stage at the age of five when she played the angel Gabriel in a Nativity play. Alex continued to pursue acting and made her first television appearance at the age of fifteen on the British children's series Grange Hill.
Later, Alex attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. This led to an impressive career in the theatre, including membership in the Royal Shakespeare Company. Alex appeared in dozens of productions on the stage and screen before her big break came. Alex landed the title role in the PBS miniseries Moll Flanders. This juicy role and Alex's impressive performance caught the attention of ER's producers. They offered her a role on their show, which prompted Alex to make the move to the U.S. in 1997. In L.A., Alex went on a blind date with a German journalist named Florian Haertel. Their relationship progressed and the two were married on December 29, 1998. Alex and Florian built a house in the Hollywood Hills where they live with their rescue dogs (dogs that were rescued from the pound before they were to be destroyed). Then, on March 28, 2001, Alex and Florian welcomed their first child, Salome Violetta Haertel, who weighed in at 6 lbs 11 ounces.
